Meet Tarika Villagran, Investor Relations
Our team Q&As give you an inside look at the people behind Folklore.
As part of our Investor Relations team, Tarika looks after our cherished relationships with potential and existing LPs and other key stakeholders in the firm, while also helping us realise our vision of becoming a generational investor in the best global success stories to come out of Australia and New Zealand.
What was your journey before landing at Folklore?
My career trajectory has been anything but linear – more like a pinball machine. I studied Hospitality as I have a passion for exploring the world and kickstarted my early career in corporate account management for luxury hotels.
After several years, I decided to pivot and work for a B2B SaaS company which gave me exposure to different roles ranging from integrated payment processing and revenue strategy to consulting and sales leadership.
I faced major burn-out during the pandemic and decided to walk away from my corporate career to take a pause. Admittedly, I am not great at pausing so to keep myself entertained, I contracted myself as a revenue consultant which unintentionally led me to run the operation of a small edtech startup and discover my love for the startup ecosystem.
What made you choose VC as a career path and why Folklore?
I am a total nerd and get a lot of enjoyment from working in fast-paced and agile environments that require structure and process to support a growing operation.
I knew I wanted to do meaningful work and had a big interest in the local startup ecosystem which led me to join the Startmate Fellowship last year to better gauge the opportunities available. It was during the Fellowship that I had the chance to meet the team at Folklore and immediately felt drawn to their culture and shared vision.
I consider myself very lucky to have found the opportunity to enter a space where I can not only apply my skillset but be part of a vehicle that helps local founders turn their visions into reality, all whilst working alongside a team of smart and like-minded people.
What exactly does Investor Relations do?
Keeping it simple, IR drives the fuel so that we can invest in visionary ideas and founders.
My role at Folklore is to support our existing investors and develop relationships with new ones who are interested in venture capital as a vehicle for generational change and a source of outside returns.
What is something unique about you?
I am a third culture kid and nomad at heart having had the opportunity to live in 10 different cities across 6 countries! One of the hardest questions you can ask me is “Where are you from?” as the explanation normally takes a couple of minutes.
