Tempus: My Next Big Step

When I moved from the US to Australia in 2014, I had no idea what I was in for. Truth be told, I had never even visited this country before making the insane decision to get on a plane and relocate 7,500 miles away (12,000 km if you insist). What’s the worst that could happen?

This is the question I’ve asked myself time and time again over the course of my journey. I’ve never followed a linear path (just ask my family and friends). While my peers were working their way up the corporate food chain, I was exploring what the world had to offer and pushing myself to do things I had never done before. As a friend of mine once put it, I’m an expert generalist and my curiosities propel my professional decisions. This curiosity has allowed me to develop diverse skills from solving lots of different problems, and with no regrets about what I may have tried and failed along the way.

Where my story begins

Straight out of university, I joined a Boston-based symphony orchestra to launch and manage their in-house record label. I was a one (wo)man operation, a freelance violinist armed with passion for creating new music with zero commercial experience. Five Grammy nominations later, I had fallen in love with the process of bringing an idea to life; it was my first taste of entrepreneurism.

In search of something bigger, I packed up my car and drove cross country to San Francisco, and never looked back. I joined Pandora Radio in sales and growth, building out the company’s East Coast team. A year later, the opportunity to join Dropbox came knocking. I joined the founding sales team that created Dropbox’s early B2B strategy, and relocated to Dublin as part of the landing team that kicked off their global expansion. It was a wild ride to see the company explode from 100-something employees to over 1000 in a couple of years, and humbling to work alongside some of the brightest people I’ve ever met.

Joining Canva (and moving to Australia) was my next step. I had the privilege to lead business development and work closely with the founders and chief evangelist to establish scalable business operations. It was a chance to continue doing what I love — the ever-adapting generalist in a high growth company, identifying how and where the engine could run faster and better in one of Australia’s most exciting companies.

But still being an outsider, I wanted to go deeper and develop a stronger network and affinity for the tech ecosystem in the country I now call home. So I joined Sydney-based engineering recruitment firm Lookahead Search, to head up their executive search desk and engage across our technology community in a whole new way. I was able to meet and work with Australia’s most ambitious companies and their founders, and to help them build incredible tech teams from junior developers all the way to the CTO.

This brings us to today. For the record, it wasn’t an insane decision to relocate to Australia. If anything, it’s been a brilliantly eye-opening experience. Many believe that the pinnacle of their career is the day they land in Silicon Valley. I’ve lived and worked there, it was awesome, but it’s not where I want to be. Because the massive opportunity I see is right here on our doorstep. We’re just at the beginning, and it’s why I’m excited to share the next step in my journey.

I have joined Tempus Partners to back the next generation of Australian and NZ founders building the frontier companies of tomorrow.

Backing frontier founders

Tempus has a fantastic track record and a limitless horizon ahead. Ingrained in the ‘Tempus way’ is the desire to back outstanding founders and teams striving to create important companies and new categories — companies such as Ansarada, HealthMatch and Auror. In meeting the founders first-hand, I realised there’s something special about Tempus. They are values-driven, deeply experienced, and have genuine empathy for the founder journey.

I feel lucky to have the experiences I’ve gained, but more than anything, I want to do my part to give back to our growing startup community. This time, I don’t want to do it through one product or one team member — but to empower on a bigger scale with founders who are pushing the limits of their own frontiers.

In my role, I’ll be deeply involved in investment decision making and oversee the operations of our funds. I’ll also bring curiosity, insight, and a trusted advisor approach to working with our founders as they grow their teams.

With the team at Tempus, there is a shared vision on making a positive impact at a generational level. Tempus is the right place for me to do my part in this community because they are in it for the long haul. And so am I.

If you’re a founder exploring the next frontier, I’d love to hear from you! Just email me at hannah@tempuspartners.com.au.
